Songs that Provide Relief

How Gentle God’s Commands

1. How gentle God’s commands!
    How kind his precepts are!
    Come, cast your burdens on the Lord.
    And trust his constant care.

2. Beneath his watchful eye,
    His Saints securely dwell;
    That hand which bears all nature up
    Shall guard his children well.

3. Why should this anxious load
    Press down your weary mind?
    Haste to your Heav’nly Father’s throne
    And sweet refreshment find.

4. His goodness stands approved,
    Unchanged from day to day;
    I’ll drop my burden at his feet
    And bear a song away.

Be Still, My Soul

1. Be still, my soul: The Lord is on thy side;
With patience bear thy cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In ev’ry change he faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: Thy best, thy heav’nly Friend
Thru thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

2. Be still, my soul: Thy God doth undertake
To guide the future as he has the past. Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last Be still, my soul: The waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while he dwelt below.

3. Be still, my soul: The hour is hast’ning on
When we shall be forever with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: When change and tears are past,
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

Aging

When I see my wrinkles I think, "I got there faster than you".

The Day Cecily Fell Down . . .

 . . . on her nose into the base of the sewing machine table.

The Things Oliver Says

Oliver: How do you our bodies stick together? Will they fall apart?

Later on the car ride, in reference to a jogger . . .

Oliver: Why is that man naked? . . . It's because he doesn't own any clothes.

While talking with Oliver before bedtime . . .

Oliver: Mom, I'm a fruit-guy.

Steak and Shake

Music

Scene: driving in the car, after dropping Dad off at work Mom decides to turn off the classical music and turn on the top 40 radio station (which has become more and more rare).

Oliver: "What is this?!"

Mom: "It's (. . . so and so popular artist). Do you like it?

Oliver: Yes!

. . . Hmmmm, I dunno. This isn't music, this is just noise.

Scene: Driving in the car Mom turns on the oldies station.

Cecily: "What's this?!" (look of extreme concern on her face)

Mom: "It's the Begees, baby! Do you like it?"

Cecily: (silence)

Lesson: Expose my children more to a variety of music styles.

Good news: Oliver wants to play the violin and piano.

Bad news: He's been singing Bizet's "March of the Kings" for the past two weeks and it's just about banned from our house.

Favorite Girl

Oliver: You're my favorite girl, Mommy.

Me: I am?! I'm so glad that I'm you're favorite girl. You're my favorite boy!

Oliver: What does 'favorite girl' mean?

Me: Uh . . .

Oliver: It means we love each other.

And now for your viewing pleasure, the myriad of emotions by Oliver while eating yogurt.
